Baseball Picks up Midweek Win at Siena
April 06, 2022 | Baseball
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team extended its win streak to seven-straight games on Wednesday afternoon at Connors Park with an 8-3 victory over Siena.
The Black Knights (12-15, 6-2 PL) put runners on the base paths in all but one inning and drew a season-high 11 walks, an effort that was highlighted by Derek Berg's three. Sam Ruta, one of four Cadets with a two-hit game, tallied a team-high three RBI to help pace the offense.
Army's pitching staff used five different arms to limit the Saints (7-20, 4-2 MAAC) to just two earned runs. Teddy Lepcio (1-1), who pitched 1.1 innings in relief, was awarded the win while Sean Dennehy picked up the team's fourth save and his first of the year.
The Cadets led for the entirety of the game, putting up a combined three runs in the opening two innings. After Carter Macias scored on a wild pitch in the first, Ruta collected two RBI when his single drove in both Kevin Dubrule and Hunter Meade. Siena responded in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI double that trimmed the advantage down to 3-1.
The home team attacked once again in the fifth, drawing back-to-back walks to lead off its half of the frame and forcing the Black Knights into their bullpen. Tyler Prichard allowed one of starting arm Mike Ruggieri's runners to score before handing the ball over to Lepcio, who recorded the third out to help Army preserve its lead at 3-2.
In the back half of the game, the Cadets were able to put up five additional runs to re-distance themselves from the Saints. Army scored three in the sixth before capping off its total in the ninth when Meade plated Berg and Cerruto with a single. After being limited by Lepcio, Steven Graver and Dennehy, an Army miscue allowed Siena to add one final run in the bottom of the ninth.
What's Next
Army's road trip will continue with a Patriot League series at Lehigh. The two teams will face off in a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 before closing out the weekend with a 12 p.m. game on Sunday, April 10.
