Jones Named Patriot League Women's Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete Of The Year
March 09, 2022 | Women's Track and Field
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Georgia Jones has been selected as the 2022 Patriot League Women's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year announced on Wednesday. Jones was also named the 2021 Patriot League Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Jones joins Catherine Gaffigan, Lauren Rowe, Lisa Junta, and Lynne Mooradian as Cadets who have earned the distinguished award. Jones and Gaffigan (1994-95) are the only female Cadets to be named scholar-athlete of the year in cross country and indoor track and field in the same academic year.
Jones followed a record-setting cross country season where she led the Cadets in every race including winning three events on her way to setting the 6K record and capturing the 2021 Patriot League Individual Championship, with an impressive indoor season.
She competed in five meets during the indoor season. In the annual Star Meet, she won the 1-Mile and 3000 events. She set a personal best in the 3000 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. She concluded the indoor season winning the 5000m in a personal-best time (16:53.17), placing second in the 3000, and third in the 1 mile with a personal-best time of 4:50.20 on her way to claiming the highest-point scorer title.
Jones is an international affairs major with a GPA of 4.075 in the spring term, which contributed to her overall academic GPA of 4.017. She wears the star (3.67+ academic GPA for 2+ consecutive semesters) and is in the top 10% of her class. Jones' cumulative GPA is 3.952. Jones also tutors within West Point's Center for Enhanced Performance (CEP) and is College Reading & Learning (CRLA) certified in addition to providing tutoring in physics.
Head Coach Mike Smith on Georgia Jones
"Georgia was the best cross country runner in the Patriot League last fall and she was the best distance runner in the league this winter. She has demonstrated remarkable consistency in her performance and great competitive range from the mile to the 5k. The 24 points that she scored at the Patriot League Indoor Championships are the most scored by an Army woman since I have been here and we have had some elite high-point scorers in recent years (Halbrook, McMullen, Brown to name a few). This is award is not something that she aspires to as she is more marked by humility than hubris. But it is a well-deserved honor and she can no longer hide from her success. Georgia is as impressive in the classroom as she is on the track. At West Point, there is a great deal of emphasis placed on the pursuit of excellence. It is understood that failure is always a possibility and for some, the risk of failure is too great to fully engage in the pursuit. That is where Georgia Jones is different. She is always looking to be tested. The physical grind of training, the competitive risk of losing a race balanced against the satisfaction in winning one, and the commitment to meeting the expectations of professors and officers are the regular challenges on which she thrives. Georgia is fond of saying "I want to give it my all". Her "all" places her on the Dean's list, lands her atop Patriot League podiums, and secures her position as a fixture in the media headlines. We are lucky to have her in our program and at this institution."
