Black Knights Battle With Broncos

MEDEIRA BEACH, FL --- Army West Point Softball (4-11) split the day with Western Michigan (5-10), winning the first game 4-3 but falling 2-0 to the Broncos later in the day.
GAME 1
It was a battle of the pitchers in the first inning as Army had Jolie Duong (4-3) in the circle fighting to keep the Broncos off the board. Western Michigan was able to score first in the second inning to lead 1-0 over Army.
The teams remained scoreless for the next two innings. Army went to work in the bottom of the fifth pushing four runs off two hits and two errors. Julia Farris got the momentum going with a solo home run to right center to tie the game at 1-1. Two Black Knights were able to get on base to keep the momentum going for Army. Duong took the batter's box with two on, two out and fired off a home run to right center for three RBI. She pushed the Black Knights to a 4-2 led over the Broncos.
Western Michigan was able to fight back in the top of the sixth pushing two runs off four hits, cutting Army's lead to 4-3. Duong kept the Broncos off the board in the top of the seventh closing the game with strikeout to secure the 4-3 win over the Broncos. She racked up a total of six in 7.0 innings of work.
GAME 2
Western Michigan got on the board first scoring two runs in the first to lead 2-0 over Army. The Black Knights had trouble at the plate, unable to get momentum going.
In the top of the third inning, Julianna LaRusso recorded a leadoff double. Duong drew a walk to get another runner on base with no outs. Kayla Edwards threw down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. The Black Knights were unable to capitalize on the opportunity leaving three on base and headed back to the field.
Army had another opportunity in the top of the sixth with two runners on base after a single from Ellie Caldwell and Mikayala Klepfer and a fielder's choice. The Cadets couldn't get the job done leaving the two runners on base. Army fell 2-0 to the Broncos. Olivia Farris (0-6) recorded seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
