Offense Powers Baseball Past UT Arlington
March 08, 2022 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Texas – Behind a season-high 14 hits from six different players, the Army West Point baseball team cruised to an 8-4 victory over UT Arlington on Thursday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Nick Manesis led the effort, hitting at a 3-for-5 clip with three runs scored and a home run. He was one of three Black Knights (3-7) to record three knocks, joined by Ross Friedrick and Cam Cerruto. Friedrick recorded a game-high two RBI and came around two score twice, while Cerruto added a run of his own.
On the mound, Army threw five different arms that combined to limit the Mavericks (4-7) to six hits. Steven Graver, who started on the bump, was awarded his first career win after kicking off the staff day with 3.0 innings of work while allowing two earned runs and fanning two batters. Both Tyler Prichard and Brian Dawson accounted for UT Arlington's other two runs, while both Matthew Ronnebaum and Robbie Buecker emerged from the outing unscathed.
The Mavericks were first to get on the board, tagging up a sac fly in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. After two innings, Army responded with a four-spot that began with three runners scoring on an error and ended when Cerruto roped an RBI double, putting the Cadets up 4-1.
The teams traded runs in the following frame, with Manesis' first home run of the season accounting for Army's and another sac fly scoring one for the Mavs, pushing the score to 5-2.
Over the next two frames, the Cadets scored three unanswered runs to re-distance themselves from the home team. Braden Golinski began the spree with an RBI groundout that pushed Cerruto across before Friedrick's second double of the night and Kevin Dubrule's single drove in an additional two runs that extended the advantage to 8-2.
UT Arlington plated the final two runs of the night in the bottom of the seventh, using back-to-back RBI singles to do so, but Army's pitching staff was able to hold them off for the remainder of the game as the team held on for its victory.
The Black Knights' offense kept the pressure on the Mavs' pitching staff throughout the entirety of the game, cranking out at least one hit in all but the ninth inning.
Coach's Corner
"The offense swung the bat well today, we played good defense behind a nice effort by the pitching staff. This was a team win with lots of contributors. It's nice to play some midweek games see what guys can do." - Head Coach Jim Foster
