Baseball Drops Second Game to UT Arlington to Split Series
March 09, 2022 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Texas – After taking the first midweek game against UT Arlington, the Army West Point baseball team fell 8-5 on Wednesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
A three-run fifth inning from the Mavericks' (5-7) bats was the difference in the loss, as all five of the Black Knights' (3-8) runs were recorded before the fateful frame.
Carter Macias led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. He was one of three Cadets to finish the night with a pair of knocks, as both Sam Ruta and Kevin Dubrule achieved the feat. Army outhit its host 8-7, with both sides leaving a combined 12 runners stranded throughout the night.
Right-handed pitcher Dom Trippi (0-1) was hit with the loss, as he was tagged with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth.
The majority of the game's scoring came in the opening frame, with seven combined runs crossing home plate. Army opened up the night by taking a 3-0 lead, scoring on a passed ball and a wild pitch before Kevin Dubrule capped off the spree with an RBI triple. The Mavericks got the runs back and then some in their half, tagging up four against starting arm Trevor Finan after cranking out an RBI double, back-to-back RBI singles and driving in a run on a groundout.
Finan was relieved by Trippi at the start of the third, following a second inning that saw him face the minimum. Trippi retired the first two batters he faced before UT Arlington worked a runner on. A single to the outfield allowed the Mav to score, bumping the home team's lead to 5-3.
Over the next two innings, Army scored a pair of runs to tie things up. Dubrule got the push started with his second extra-base hit of the night, a double that drove in pinch-runner Cullen Horowicz in the top of the fourth. Carter Macias then knotted up the score at 5-5 in the following frame when he came in on a wild pitch.
The tie was the closest that the team got down the stretch, as the Mavs went on to score the three unanswered runs that lifted them to their final margin of victory. Both Trippi and left-handed pitcher Sean Dennehy made appearances during the inning and were tagged with runs.
Army did manage to get the tying run into the batter's box in the top of the seventh after a walk and a single put Macias and Ruta on, but a double play got the home team out of the jam.
Dennehy and Teddy Lepcio shut down UT Arlington's offense in the final innings of the night, as Dennehy allowed just one baserunner between the sixth and seventh innings before handing the ball over to Lepcio, who retired the side in the eighth.
