Army Battles at Second Day of USF Tournament

TAMPA, Fla. --- Army West Point Softball (3-9) opened the day by seeking revenge on Florida A&M (5-14) winning 4-2, but fell 4-1 to #24 USF (16-3) later that afternoon.

GAME 1
 The first three innings were a battle of the pitchers. Jolie Duong (3-2) was dealing for the Black Knights recording two strikes out and only four hits four hits to the 21 batters she faced.
Army went to work in the bottom of the fourth. Kayla Edwards hit a leadoff triple to center to get momentum going for the Cadets. Maaika Dones fired off a triple to right field to bring in the first run for Army. Ellie Caldwell recorded a sacrifice fly to bring in Dones to up Army's lead to 2-0. With a runner on third, Maddie Wilkes hit her first double of the season to right field to bring in the final run of the inning for Army. The Black Knights finished with three runs on four hits, and one errors to lead 4-0 over Florida A&M.

Army kept the Rattlesnakes off the board for the next two inning and pushed one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Brook Mitchell fired off an RBI double to left for the Cadets final run for Army.

The Rattlesnakes made a last effort push in the top of the seventh before Emily Iannotti shut down their efforts with a strikeout. Army captured the 4-2 victory.

GAME 2

Both teams got hits on the score line in the first inning, but neither were able to score. Olivia Farris (0-5) was in the circle for the Cadets recording two strikeouts. USF was able to get the bats going first, pushing two runs in the second inning off two hits and an error to lead 2-0 over Army.

In the top of the third Julianna LaRusso fired off a base hit to get momentum going for Army. Edwards drew a walk to get the tying runner aboard for the Black Knights. Army was unable to capitalize on the opportunity and left the runners on base.

Army had another scoring opportunity in the top of the fourth with Grace Snyder on third base, but the team came up short at the plate. The Black Knights shut the Bulls down at the plate in the bottom frame to keep the score at 2-0 in favor of USF.

The Black Knights went to work in the top of the fifth, with the first batter, Bebek, reaching base. LaRusso drew a walk to get another runner aboard for Army. Leila Hurst hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring in Edwards to cut the Bulls' lead to 2-1. Army finished the frame with one run off one hit and one error. USF answered Army's run with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 4-1 over Army.
