WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point football team has rounded out its recruiting staff with the addition of four new members, as announced by the program on Monday. Aaron Bota, Rebecca Perez, Eddie Hernon and Shamir Bearfield all join the Black Knights with over 30 years of combined experience.
Bota, who will serve as the recruiting creative content coordinator, makes the move to the Hudson Valley after a two-year stint as the football creative media coordinator at the University of the Incarnate Word. In his role at UIW, he was responsible for managing and creating content for the team's social media accounts. A 2020 graduate of Georgia Southern, Bota worked as a football video assistant and a creative media intern while pursuing his bachelor's degree in sports management.
The now-Director of Recruiting, Perez is coming off a three-year stint as a recruiting assistant with San Jose State University football. During her time with the Spartans, Perez assisted with all on-campus recruiting efforts while coordinating summer prospect evaluations, collaborated with the director of player personnel to provide a first-class official visit experience and assisted the offensive and defensive coordinators with prospect lists and communication efforts. The 2021 recipient of the Women's Sports Foundation's Scott Pioli & Family Fund for Women Football Coaches and Scouts got her start with the Spartans when she was an undergraduate student, working as a defensive student assistant. Perez holds a bachelor's degree in communication studies from San Jose State and is currently working towards a master's in education counseling and communication studies at San Jose State.
Hernon was hired as the director of player personnel, joining the Black Knights after working in the same role with the Princeton Tigers football program. In almost six years with the three-time Ivy League Champions, Hernon's tenure was highlighted by helping the Tigers recruit the top-ranked class in all of FCS Football in two different seasons, while also beating out multiple Power 5 programs. In addition to his recruiting role, Hernon also had responsibilities with defense/special teams quality control and served as the team's NFL liaison. With his guidance, the Tigers' defense finished in the nation's top-10 during three separate campaigns and the kickoff team was tops in 2019, allowing only 190 return yards all year. Hernon brings other valuable experience to West Point, having held stints with the Cleveland Browns (external scouting charter), Georgetown University (video coordinator), CBS Sports (production intern) and Rutgers (football video assistant). A 2012 Rutgers graduate, Hernon has a master's degree in sports industry management from Georgetown (2014).
Rounding out Army Football's new staff members is Bearfield, who was named the director of on campus recruiting. This will be the first player personnel role of Bearfield's career, as he comes to the Banks of the Hudson following a one-year stint as the cornerbacks coach at Fairleigh Dickinson. To go along with his on-field responsibilities, Bearfield had a major role in the Devils' recruiting with six key areas and oversight of the team's official visits. Prior to his start in collegiate football, Bearfield had three different stints with high school teams, most recently serving as the defensive backs coach at Seton Hall Prep (2020-21). A four-year letterwinner while playing safety, nickel and outside linebacker, Bearfield graduated from the College of William & Mary with a bachelor's degree in American Studies before completing a master's in sports management at LSU.
