Army Splits a Pair of Games

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- Army West Point Softball (6-16) fell in the opening game of weekend falling 11-1 to Binghamton (9-8) but bounced back later in the day to win 4-2 over Monmouth (3-16).
GAME 1
Army had a strong first inning but quickly fell behind to Binghamton and was unable to dig itself out of the hole falling 11-1 to Binghamton.
Angelina Bebek got the bats going in the top of the first with a leadoff single to right field. Kayla Edwards reached first off an error and was quickly moved to second as Maddie Wilkes drew a walk to load the bases. Ellie Caldwell helped Army take a 1-0 lead over Binghamton by firing off an RBI single to center field. Army ended the inning with one run off two hits and an error. In the bottom half of the inning, Binghamton scored four runs off four hits and two errors to take a 4-1 lead over Army.
The teams were silent in the second inning, Brook Mitchell recorded the lone hit of the inning but was stranded on base. Olivia Farris (0-9) was in the circle for Army and helped the Black Knights get back to the batter's box.
Binghamton added on four more runs in the third inning off two hits and one error to take an 8-1 lead over Army. The Cadets had trouble at the plate in the top of the fourth and headed back to the field. Binghamton pushed three runs off two hits to put the final score at 11-1.
GAME 2
Though the Black Knights had a slow start, the Cadets battled Monmouth throughout the entire game bouncing back in the top of the seventh to claim the 4-2 victory.
Monmouth was the first team to score, plating one run off two hits in the bottom of the first. Army had trouble at the plate in the first two innings, but Mikayla Klepfer broke the silence with a single to center field in the top of the third. Mitchell kept the momentum going with a bunt single to move Klepfer into scoring position. Only 60 feet from tying the game, Klepfer took advantage of a Monmouth error and sprinted home. Army finished the frame with one run off two hits and an error, tying the game at 1-1.
Monmouth jumped back in front of the Cadets in the bottom of the third by scoring one run off two hits. Army plated a run in the top of the fifth as Mitchell scored off a squeeze to tie the game at 2-2. The Black Knights scored one run off three hits, highlighted by a double off the bat off Mitchell. Emily Iannotti (2-2) kept Monmouth off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth retiring the first three batters.
The teams were scoreless through the sixth inning, neither able to capitalize on runners. In the top of the seventh, Lauren Little fired off a single to center to get the bats going for Army. Mitchell kept the momentum going by drawing a walk to get two runners on base. Wilkes took the batter's box two batters later, with two runners on base and two outs on the board. She fired off a two RBI single to center field to give Army the 4-2 lead over Monmouth. Army was able to keep Monmouth off the board in the bottom half securing the 4-2 win.
