Baseball Scores Early Before Falling at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The Army West Point baseball dropped its series-opener against Elon 7-3 on Friday night at Latham Park, despite cranking out 11 hits to finish in the double-digits for the fourth time this year.
Carter Macias led the team offensively, going 2-for-2 while drawing a pair of walks in his other two plate appearances. Macias, who scored two of the team's three runs, was one of four Cadets to post a multi-hit game and was additionally one of two players to tally a home run, as Cullen Horowicz also achieved the feat for the first time in his career.
On the mound, Army (3-12) used three different arms throughout the game with starting arm Patrick Melampy (0-1) taking the loss. The starter was tagged with five earned runs through 4.2 innings and walked two batters while fanning three. Both Tyler Prichard (1.0 innings) and Brian Dawson (2.1 innings) also made appearances, each allowing at least one run.
The Black Knights' offense got going early, as Macias came around to score his first run in the opening frame when Nick Manesis singled to right field. Though the Phoenix (10-7) responded in the bottom with a solo home run, Horowicz and Macias each put balls out of the park in the following two innings, putting Army on top 3-1.
Over the next six frames, Elon scored six unanswered runs to claim its margin of victory at 7-3. Army's bats were limited to just five hits down the stretch, notching two in the top of the eighth.
What's Next
Army's series at Elon will continue on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. game. The series finale is set for a 1p.m. first pitch on Sunday. Each of the remaining two games will be carried on FloBaseball.
