March 19, 2022 | Baseball
ELON, N.C. – The Army West Point baseball team scored first before being shut out for six-straight innings en route to losing a 6-1 game opposite Elon on Saturday afternoon at Latham Park.
Derek Berg was the only Black Knight (3-13) to come across home plate, scoring on an overthrown ball in the top of the third. The second baseman was one of four Cadets to finish the day with a pair of hits.
Army out-hit its host 9-6 while leaving seven runners stranded. Both teams combined for a total of six errors, as each side struggled with miscues throughout the afternoon.
After 12 of the first 13 combined batters were retired, Berg led off the third with a bunt single for the first hit of the game. The Phoenix (11-7) responded by making two-consecutive outs before Berg came in on a bad throw by the shortstop, putting the Black Knights in front 1-0.
Elon kicked off the bottom of the frame by roping a double for a knock of its own before using a sac fly to bring the run in. A throwing error by starting arm Connelly Early pushed runners to second and third, but the southpaw got out of the inning with the score tied up at 1-1.
Army's offense struggled with timely hitting down the stretch, notching seven hits while leaving five runners on the base paths. On the other side of the ball, Elon put up five unanswered runs between the sixth and eighth innings to secure their final lead.
Both Early (1-2), who was hit with the loss, and reliever Tanner Gresham were each tagged with at least two earned runs.
