Golf Opens Spring in Puerto Rico

DORADO, Puerto Rico - The Army West Point golf team had four players post under par scores in the opening round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate on Sunday.

The Black Knights finished round one in the sixth spot on the team leaderboard with a 4-under score as team. Ball State leads the way at 14-under par after day one. Individually, Tom Katsenes had the best round at 3-under and is currently in a tie for 10th. Harry Jones of Wofford leads the way on the leaderboard at 7-under par.

TOURNAMENT NOTES

Katsenes was solid during his round with two birdies and an eagle and only one bogey on the day.
He was 3-under on his final eight holes and after he gave up one stroke with his lone bogey of the day.
Patrick Song played an incredible round in his first collegiate start and shot a 2-under 70.
He is in a tie for 18th on the leaderboard and had six birdies.
Dragon Theam was another under par finisher for the Black Knights with a 1-under 71 in his first round of the spring.
He rebounded after going 3-over in his first nine to shoot 4-under in his last nine, including an eagle on the second-to-last hole.
John Heckel Jr. rounded out the top players for the Black Knights after a 1-under 71 and joined Theam in a tie for 22nd on the player leaderboard.
Joshua Kim finished at 1-over par in his first round, while Samuel Kim and Gary Bullard posted 2-over rounds of 74.

With our flight cancellation and late arrival to Puerto Rico, I'm extremely proud of how our team performed today. Without having a practice round and our three plebes never seeing the golf course before, the whole travel squad played really smart and disciplined golf. We're very happy for Patrick Song; his 2-under, 70 in his first varsity round was awesome, and the excitement of our team for Patrick was a beautiful thing to see as a coach. We're all excited about having another opportunity tomorrow to get a little better, but it's good to see some early returns of all the work the guys have put in at our Groves Indoor Practice Facility this winter.
