Black Knights Drop First Game to Blue Devils

DURHAM, N.C. --- Army West Softball (1-5) dropped the first game of the Duke Invitational to the host, #13 Duke University (10-2), 8-0 in five innings, on Thursday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium.

Army's defense had a strong start holding #13 Duke scoreless through the third inning but faced trouble in the fourth and fifth. Jolie Duong (1-2) led the Black Knights in the circle with allowing just two hits in the first 10 batters she faced. She was stellar in the first inning striking out the first batter and retiring the last batter to leave two Blue Devils on base.

Army had great fielding in the second and third inning, ending multiple scoring opportunities for Duke.

The Black Knights had trouble at the plate only get one runner on, as Duong reached first on a passed ball in the top of the fourth. The Blue Devils' batters gave Army trouble in the fourth inning as Duke scored four runs off five hits and one error to take a 4-0 lead at the end of the fourth. Army had another tough frame in the batter's box and headed out to the field. Duke went on to score four runs off three hits and one error to win the game 8-0 over Army.

Army's night game against #19 Michigan has been called off after travel delays pushed the Wolverines' arrival in North Carolina to within 90 minutes of game time. There are no current plans to reschedule it.
