Gavin Abric Named Richter Award Semifinalist
February 22, 2022 | Hockey
WINTHROP, Mass. - After landing on the watch list earlier this season, Army West Point Hockey goaltender, Gavin Abric has officially been named a semi-finalist for the Mike Richter Award. Given annually to the nation's top goaltender, Abric finds himself as one of only 10 netminders in the nation on the list.
"It is an honor to be recognized as a semi-finalist for the Richter Award," said Abric. "I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates coaches and family. The guys have played great in front of me all year and have helped me every step of the way. Getting to play in front of our amazing fans at Tate Rink motivated all of us this season and their support has been unbelievable. I'm looking forward to getting back to work with the team to prepare for our season finale this weekend before we get into the playoffs."
After not playing a game last season, the Hayward, Wis. native took over the starting role early in the season and has not looked back. The sophomore has started 27 games for the Black Knights, posting 13 wins and four shutouts so far in 2021-22. Abric's numbers while in net have consistently been ranked amongst the national leaders. Currently, Abric ranks fifth and 16th with a .931 save percentage and and 2.25 GAA. His save percentage, GAA and shutout numbers are all the best in the Atlantic Hockey Association this season.
Army's Head Hockey Coach, Brian Riley, is thrilled that his goaltender earned this recognition.
"It's a great honor for Gavin [Abric] to be recognized as a semifinalist for the Richter Award.," said Riley. "He has had an outstanding season for us and his numbers speak for themselves. People can look at his stats and know he is a great goalie, but what people might not know is that he is an incredible person. His unbelievable work ethic and drive are some of the things that make him special. Last year he didn't play in a game and you wouldn't have known that by how hard he approached practicing every single day. I couldn't be more excited for Gavin [Abric] and I can't wait to see where this goes for him."
The five finalists for the Mike Richter award will be announced in late March with the winner announced after the National Championship game in early April.
