Wrestling Falls in Star Match at Navy
February 18, 2022 | Wrestling
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West Point wrestling team dropped a heartbreaker to rival Navy on Friday night in Alumni Hall, falling 22-9 in the annual Star Match, presented by USAA.
The meeting between the two sides was close until the last few bouts of the evening, as the teams traded the lead back-and-forth throughout the opening action. Of the seven matches that went in favor of the Midshipmen, five were decided by extremely small margins of four points or less, highlighting the intensity of the overall battle.
Corey Shie (141 lbs.), Matthew Williams (149 lbs.) and No. 23 Ben Pasiuk (174 lbs.) highlighted the action for Army (2-7, 2-2 EIWA), earning three decisions to account for the Black Knights' nine total points.
Shie and Williams competed in the night's opening two battles, allowing Army to jump out to a 6-0 lead over Navy (6-5, 3-4 EIWA). Shie defeated his opponent 7-3 before Williams narrowly missed out on a major decision when he collected a 10-3 victory.
Over the next two matches, the Mids used a pair of closely-contested decisions to tie the team score up at six points apiece before Pasiuk stopped the scoring with his 9-2 decision in the 174-pound bout.
Though Pasiuk's win put Army back on top at 9-6, it was the team's last victory of the evening as the home team was able to overtake its visitors for the win.
Despite the loss, the Black Knights were successful in limiting Navy's ability to control the match. The Mids' 22 points are the second-least that they have earned in any victory this season, direct evidence of Army's ability to fight.

Coach's Corner
"There were some tough hard fought matches tonight and we just didn't make enough of them go our way. There are no excuses, we didn't do enough to win. I didn't have some guys prepared like I thought I did and that's on me. Result stings but it won't define us. We'll move forward and make some adjustments." – Head Coach Kevin Ward
