COACH'S CORNER
On the women's performance
We expected to see some inconsistencies in performance today. Over a two-week period of time you can lose a lot of fitness and with holiday travel, weather issues and the prevalence of Covid 19, we just hope for the best when the team comes back; based on what I saw today we are in pretty good shape. We didn't compete our entire lineup as we try to balance the need to compete with the need to train. Most of our distance runners had the weekend off while almost all of the speed power people were out there competing today. The throws group put up similar marks as compared to the December meet. Emily Mikoud and Emily Fink came very close to their December personal bests. I expect that from Emily Mikoud but for Emily Fink, today's 50-foot throw is a great indicator of her consistency. In the 60m, I was not surprised to see Hannah Blakey run as well as she did today. She may have the most range of anyone that we have on our roster. She was powerful out of the blocks and did a nice job of transitioning mid-race and narrowly won the race in a lean at the line. Her performance was outstanding.Â
Â
On the oval, we had a few of the younger women open their seasons and they did a nice job of competing and put up some good early season marks. In the jumps, I thought we did some good things. The vault women had some good attempts at some high bars and in the horizontals. Gabrielle Ingram had a nice debut in the triple jump off some limited work on the runway. We will enter almost our entire lineup next week at Virginia Tech and see if we can continue to improve." – Mike Smith Â

Our throwers were very good. That group has been dominant in our conference for some time now and the marks today were some of the bests we have ever had. Jamir Gibson stole the show again in winning both throws. He has not missed a beat since December and today he got the school record in the shot put in what was very likely his last meet in Gillis Field House. He has several records now and I won't be surprised if he adds more accolades by the end of the year. In the jumps, I thought the vault guys looked pretty good. It is difficult to maintain technical fitness over the holiday break, so we saw some misses today. In the end, both Ethan Hesson and Ethan Hull made some nice adjustments, and the result was some good marks. Talon Estes had a nice series in the high jump. His power numbers were all up this fall so it was only a matter of time before he put everything together in the high jump. He was good in December but even better today. I have been impressed with his development. In the sprints, Jon Redmond looked very good in winning the 60m. I think he benefited from the mild weather in the Midwest over the break. His winning time of 6.87 equaled his personal best and he looks better than he ever has. The guys in the oval put up some good marks. Elijah Bellamy ran a strong 500m race and Ryan Hogan was his usual dependable self in the 200m. We learned a little bit about our team today. We will learn a lot more next week down at Virginia Tech. Â
