Butte Scores Two Goals in 3-0 Shutout Win Over Canisius
January 08, 2022 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team bounced back in a big way tonight with a 3-0 win over the Canisius Golden Griffin. Eric Butte scored a pair of goals and Gavin Abric cleaned up all 29 shots he faced to lift the Black Knights to the shutout result.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After an early jump from the Griffs, the Black Knights took control of the contest. Army utilized an aggressive forecheck to keep possession in the Canisius zone for a majority of the first period. The period felt like a continuation of last night's contest, with the Cadets putting 20 shots on goal off 27 attempts.
Thomas Farrell gave Army the lead midway through the first period with his first goal of the season. The junior ripped a shot from the top of the circle that was popped up after being tipped by a Canisius skater. The puck ended up on the back of the Griffs goaltender and across the end line to give Army the lead.
The Black Knights continued the onslaught in the second period, opening up the frame with four shot attempts. The Griffs withstood the charge, holding off the Army offense for the remainder of the period to keep the score at 1-0 after 40 minutes of play.
Army kept charging along in an attempt to add an insurance goal. A few Cadet scoring chances ended up short until Eric Butte deked through the Canisius defense and lifted a backhand shot over the shoulder of the goalie and into the back of the net to increase the Army lead to 2-0.
The Black Knight penalty kill units played excellent down the stretch, killing off three consecutive penalties to keep the Griffs off the board. Abric's 16 third-period saves came in front of a defense that blocked an additional 14 shots in the final period.
Butte ended the Griffs comeback chances with an empty net goal at 19:52 to give Army a 3-0 lead that it would hold until the final buzzer. Army remains in third place in the AHA with the three points it picked up after the win.
