WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the second straight game, Dara Murray found the back of the net in what would be the difference for the Army West Point women's soccer team in its 2-1 victory over William & Mary. The Black Knights were able to hold off the late surge from the Tribe offense, who were not able to get through junior goalkeeper Taylor Stalheim. Stalheim's save in the 89th minute capped off the win for Army, the team's third straight.
The Cadets brought the energy early, coming out fast with an attack that continually worked the ball into the Tribe's half of the field throughout the first 20 minutes of action. Sophomore Jasmine Talley broke the scoreless tie in the 18th minute, taking the feed from Lauren Drysdale and finding the lower left corner of the net for her first goal of the season and the first fo her career.
Stalheim's efforts anchoring the Army defense proved to be crucial in the first half, keeping Army on top with saves in the 14th and 23rd minutes of action and helped the Black Knights carried their 1-0 lead into the second half
The second half began much like the first for the Black Knights, as Army controlled the pace thanks to thr strong play of their midfield of Drysdale, Daniela Mendoza and Izzy Fontana.
Army was able to break through the William and Mary defense in the 60th minute, when Jasmine Talley once again broke free from her defender and delivered a cleat-to-cleat pass to Dara Murray who was able to sneak it past the Tribe goalkeeper and put Army up two goals.
The Tribe was able to get a goal on the board in the 81st minute, but it would not be enough as the Black Knights held off the William and Mary attack for the final nine minutes of play to seal their third straight win.
Coach's Corner
"First off, huge shoutout to CDT Bigelow and the Parachute Team for kicking off the game with their jump into Malek." said Chao. "Secondly, i'm proud of our squad in how they stepped onto the field and competed tonight. We gave them two words going into todays match, trust and celebrate. Trust yourself, the plan and each other. The defensive presence and finishes did exactly that and were big time! We celebrated all the little moments in the match on the field and on the sideline with energy until the final minutes!"
