WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's soccer team came out on the losing side of a clash with Fordham on Sunday afternoon at Clinton Field at Malek Stadium, falling 2-1 to the Rams.
Though the Cadets earned a 13-10 advantage in overall shots, a pair of Fordham goals in the second half helped the visitors power past the Black Knights, snapping the home team's three-game winning streak.
The game was filled with back-and-forth action between the two sides, as it took 12 minutes of play for the first shot to be fired off. Lauren Drysdale was credited with the attempt, though her look was blocked by a Fordham defender.
Once Drysdale cracked the seal, the Cadets managed to get four shots off within a span of two minutes and earned a corner kick.
The battle for possession continued after the halftime break, which the teams entered at 0-0, until Alyssa Carfagno broke open the score in the 51st minute with her first goal of the season. The shot, assisted by Elizabeth Oberhaus, put the home team up 1-0.
Minutes later, the Rams answered the push with a goal of their own by capitalizing on a free kick. Less than five minutes after netting the equalizer, Fordham then used a corner kick to take its first lead of the game at 2-1.
Army had a few chances to tie things up in the final minutes of action, but was unable to string anything together before the clock wound down.
Inside the Box Score
- In addition to earning the advantage in shots, the Cadets led the Rams in corner kicks (8-5).
- Fordham finished with a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
- Oberhaus picked up the second assist of her rookie season and now has two points on the year.
- Taylor Stalheim earned the start between the sticks and finished her day with four stops, making two in each half.
- Carfagno became the fifth different Black Knight to score this season, joining Trinity Garay (2), Dara Murray (2), Jasmine Talley (1) and Kaelan Bradley (1).
"Tough one today," head coach Tracy Chao said. "I thought we were really good in two of the four moments of the game, attacking and defending in the run of play. We gave up both goals on set pieces which are always dangerous. Ultimately, we needed to respond better in transition moments. We continued to create a lot of great chances and the fight is certainly there. This team's attitude and effort are fantastic."
Up Next
The Black Knights will hit the road for the first time in four matches and head to Burlington to face off against Vermont on Friday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Virtue Field.
