WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's soccer team continued its unbeaten streak in Patriot League play by earning a 1-1 draw against Loyola Maryland on Saturday evening at Clinton Field at Malek Stadium.
The game against the Greyhounds was the team's third of the year that went into double overtime. Despite the equality in scoring, the Cadets earned an overall advantage in shots (17-9), shots on-frame (8-7) and corner kicks (5-2) through 110 minutes of action.
Lauren Drysdale got things going early for the Black Knights, firing off the first shot of the night just five minutes after the opening whistle. Her attempt was followed by looks from both Trinity Garay and Dani Mendoza, though the visiting keeper was able to keep the Cadets off the board early in the game.
On their first shot of the night, which came 15 minutes into the action, the Greyhounds were able to get a ball past Sage Strohman to take an early 1-0 lead. Despite being in a deficit, Army continued to attack Loyola's back line and earned a 7-2 advantage in shots at halftime.
The Cadets came out of the break with high energy, which resulted in Trinity Garay using a corner kick to net the equalizer in the 51st minute. Garay took advantage of a bad touch from a Loyola player to score her team-best fourth goal of the season, booting in a ball from the top of the box.
Army had a chance to score the go-ahead goal on another set piece a few minutes later, but Elizabeth Oberhaus' ball went just a few inches over the cross bar.
The teams battled as the clock wound down and Loyola tried to end things with a last-minute corner kick, but it was inconsequential as the game was forced into overtime with the score knotted up at 1-1.
Once again, the Black Knights used the break to re-energize and Kaelan Bradley was able to get her foot on a ball just over a minute into the overtime period. Her attempt was denied and though the team had another good chance when it earned a free kick and a corner kick on back-to-back plays, the score remained tied. Loyola made a last-minute attempt at the goal, catching Strohman out of the net, but Andrea Riddle was there to clear the ball out of the goal mouth to keep the game alive. Riddle's play helped to extend the outing into a second overtime.
With 100 minutes in the books, Loyola went on to make another play at the net after earning a free kick, but Riddle was there once again to help Strohman make the stop. Only two shots were recorded in the final overtime period, both of which came from Greyhounds, as the final score was cemented at 1-1.
Inside the Box Score
- Strohman finished her day between the sticks with six stops, while the Greyhounds' keeper was forced to make seven.
- Garay has scored two goals in as many games, having found the back of the net during the recent game at Holy Cross (Sept. 22).
- Bradley and Mendoza led the Cadets with two shots on-frame apiece, as well as three total shots.
- Six different Cadets tested the Loyola goalkeeper.
- With Saturday night's results around the conference, Army is one of three teams that remains undefeated in Patriot League play. The Black Knights are joined by BU (3-0-0) and Lehigh (2-0-1).
Coach's Corner
"We talked about our collective effort and energy before the game, and no doubt we brought it from the moment they stepped out of the locker room from every single player," head coach Tracy Chao said. "And on top of that, our connectivity within the game in all four moments was fantastic and we put ourselves on the front foot from the first whistle. Excited to build on this momentum next week in our training and eyes on American."
Cadets' Corner
"I think tonight's game went really well. I think we were working as a team collectively the whole entire time. It took a lot of grit and that's what our team showed tonight. I'm really excited to take on American next weekend." – Dani Mendoza
"The team came together and worked hard. Everyone pushed through and did their own individual job so that we could come together as a unit and a team. We were able to come back from a deficit and are ready for next week with this momentum." – Andrea Riddle
