LEWISBURG, Pa. - Another multi-goal effort powered the Army West Point men's soccer team past the Bucknell Bison by a score of 2-1. Colman Kim and Andrew Guerra scored the goals for the Black Knights, whose defensive effort proved to be too much for the Bison, as Army moves to 2-0 in Patriot League play.
Senior captain Jacob Suppiah put together another great performance between the posts, recording three saves off 14 Bucknell shots to lead Army to the win.
How it Happened
In their first road matchup of Patriot League play, Army went out and set the tone early at Emmitt Field, recording the first seven shots of the contest and forcing the Bison keeper to make several difficult saves early on.
The Black Knights attacking line of John Poncy, Justin McStay and Andrew Guerra were able to create a number of scoring chances early. Atef Sikazwe and Sean Lee both entered the game midway through the half to put more pressure on the Bison.
Suppiah and the Army backline of Suppiah, Luke Doyle, Jack Eaton, Nick Atkinson and D'Anthony Brown were able to hold the Bucknell attack at bay to head into the break deadlocked at zero.
Army didn't take their foot off the gas pedal, creating a scoring opportunity just three minutes into the second half. It was Andrew Guerra who was able to break the tie after taking the feed from Jack Eaton and bending a shot around the Bison keeper to lift Army to a 1-0 lead. The goal was Guerra's third of the season.
Less than 10 minutes later, Colman Kim broke through the crowd off a corner kick, firing a shot that snuck inside the left post and gave him his first goal of the season and his first in a Black Knight uniform.
After Kim's goal, Bucknell ramped up the offensive pressure. The Bison were able to get one goal on the board, but Army's defense proved to be too much as the Black Knights would hold on to win the game, 2-1.
Coach's Corner
"A very hard earned road win tonight. Bucknell is a strong team and they made it really challenging, but we stayed committed, stayed together and executed in critical moments well and got the result.
I was very proud of the way the team competed for all 90 minutes and stuck together through the ebbs and flows of the game and how we continue to find ways to win.
We have a quick turnaround to a very good BU side at home on Wednesday." - Head Army men's soccer coach, Brian Plotkin.
Cadet's Corner
"We had a great week of practice from all 29 guys on the roster that allowed us to dig deep tonight. Big time finishes from Gage and Colman and a lot of strong defending in the box from everyone helped us get a good result on the road." - Army senior captain, Jacob Suppiah
"The team has me pumped up. Our team's level of commitment and desire to win is unmatched and it showed today. On a personal note, it feels great to get back out on the field and help the team earn three vital points!" - Army forward, Colman Kim.
Inside the Box Score
- Andrew Guerra scored his third goal of the season, which now puts him in a tie with fellow freshman Brandon Bryant for second most on the team.
- Colman Kim scored his first goal as a Black Knight in the contest.
- Jacob Suppiah recorded three saves in the win, improving his save percentage to .704 on the year.
- Army's 20 goals are the most for a Black Knight's squad through the first eight games since the 1991 season.
