WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's soccer team is 3-0 in Patriot League play for the first time since 2013, as the Black Knights used yet another multi-goal performance to defeat the Boston University Terriers, 2-0.
Andrew Guerra and Oscar Pereira provided the scoring and Jacob Suppiah took care of the rest, registering four saves help him record his second clean sheet of the season and help Army extend their lead atop the Patriot League standings.
How it Happened
Army came out looking to strike early in the contest, and was able to create a few opportunities out of the gate. Justin McStay and Andrew Guerra were able to break free from the defense, but neither was able to find the back of the net.
Another strong game for Jacob Suppiah helped the Black Knights keep the Terriers off the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes. The senior captain helped direct an Army defense that allowed only eight shots in the contest. "Supe" supplemented the strong defensive effort with four saves in the game.
The biggest save of the night, however, came courtesy of Jack Eaton. The Terriers were able to break down the Army back line early in the second half and create a shot on an open net. Eaton flew in from his post position and cleared the BU shot to keep the score at 0-0.
The offense got rolling halfway through the second half, as Oscar Pereira nearly got Army on the board with a header inside the box in the 65th minute. The attempt rang off the crossbar and was cleared before Army could clean up the shot.
It was Guerra who would break the tie and put Army on the scoreboard ten minutes later, finding the bottom left corner of the net off a cross from John Poncy.
Just four minutes later the Black Knights would strike again as Oscar Pereira danced around a defender and found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Suppiah would record one more save to help the Black Knights record a clean sheet and secure the 2-0 win.
Coach's Corner
"I'm so proud of the group. Midweek league games always pose a unique challenge and Boston [University] was very good with the ball and are a talented group.
The guys defended well, played mistake free and took our chances well. They fought natural frustrations and kept thinking about the next play. When the opportunity came later in the game we put ourselves in the right spots and came away with two good goals.
We have a quick turnaround trip to another difficult Patriot League opponent in Lehigh this weekend." - Army Head Coach, Brian Plotkin
