WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 result to Service Academy rival Air Force on Thursday evening at Malek Stadium.
While the teams were fairly even in overall chances, the Falcons used a bout of early scoring to earn the victory over the Black Knights.
Air Force worked its way into the box quickly after kickoff, firing off a shot less than five minutes into the action. While the Cadets' back line was able to block the attempt, a Falcon knocked in the rebound to hand the visiting team its early advantage.
After settling in, Army began to put pressure on Air Force's back line and both Dara Murray and Elizabeth Oberhaus fired off shots. Murray's went off the top woodwork and Oberhaus' was stopped by the keeper, keeping the slate clean for the Falcons.
The Black Knights continued to create chances before the visitors responded to their push with another goal just before the 30-minute mark, extending the edge to 2-0. Army refused to back down and continued to take shots down the stretch, earning an 8-7 lead in opportunities before the teams went into the halftime break.
The beginning of the second stanza saw a lot of back-and-forth action between the two sides, as neither team was able to fully possess the ball. Lindsey Smith made a pair of great defensive plays to break free from Air Force's pressure, but she was unable to connect with any of the other Cadets.
Only five total shots were taken as the clock wound down, three of which came off the foot of Army players. Grace Edvalds, who appeared late in the game as a reserve, had a chance within the final minute but her ball went just left of the post.
Inside the Box Score
- In total, Army earned an 11-10 advantage in shots over Air Force.
- Elizabeth Oberhaus paced the Cadets with three chances, while both Kaelan Bradley and Trinity Garay had two apiece.
- Sage Strohman finished her day between the sticks with two stops, with one coming in each half.
- The Black Knights limited the Falcons to just one corner kick while earning three themselves.
- With the result, the overall series between the teams is now tied up at 8-8-2.
"A lot of lessons were learned tonight," head coach Tracy Chao said. "We are going to continue to grow regardless of the result. We will need to renew our focus on effort and creating attacking moments, but I am excited to move into the next portion of our season which is our Patriot League schedule."
Cadets' Corner
"I think we just got in our heads a little bit before the game and we couldn't calm down the way we usually do. But this team is fully capable of pulling out a win against Lehigh on the road and that's our next step. Our next step right now is all eyes on Lehigh." – Trinity Garay
"It was a hard-fought game. We definitely left it all out on the line and we worked hard and tried to communicate and work together. We just have to bounce back and get ready for conference." – Lindsey Smith
Up Next
Army will now turn its attention towards the conference portion of its slate, which begins on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Lehigh. The Black Knights will take on the Mountain Hawks at 5 p.m. to start off their campaign for the program's fourth Patriot League title.
