WEST POINT, N.Y. – Trinity Garay's second goal in as many matches powered the Army West Point women's soccer team to its 1-0 victory over Marist on Thursday evening at Clinton Field at Malek Stadium.
The Cadets dominated possession of the ball right out of the gate. Army put the pressure on the Red Foxes' back line early on, firing off four shots within the first 20 minutes of play. Marist had a few solid looks of their own and tested keeper Sage Strohman three times in the opening stanza. The teams went into the break scoreless, but the Black Knights took an 8-4 advantage in chances with them.
Marist attempted to take control of the game in the start of the second half, but Garay's goal in the 52nd minute regained the momentum for the home team. Her game-winner was assisted by Lindsey Smith. Minutes later, Lauren Drysdale fired off back-to-back shots on-frame, but was unable to get past the visiting keeper.
Down 1-0, the Red Foxes went to their bench and brought in quite a few pairs of fresh legs, allowing them to take a 9-4 advantage in second-half shots, but it made no difference as the clock wound down.
Strohman collected a career-high six saves, besting the five-stop effort from her collegiate debut against SDSU. The shutout is the first of her rookie campaign and the Black Knights' first since their 5-0 win over American (March 20, 2021).
Coach's Corner
"This was a great, gritty win at home," head coach Tracy Chao said. "All credit to our players for taking what we've done in training and executing it this evening against a solid Marist team. There were a lot of great moments to build on and we will quickly turn our attention towards our match against Saint Peter's on Sunday. Overall, I am really proud of the 90-minute fight, the shutout and our team's defensive efforts, which led to a great finish."
