Cook Places 13th at NCAAs
June 09, 2021 | Men's Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – August Cook of the Army West Point men's track and field team finished 13th in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field meet at Hayward Field Wednesday evening.
Â
The Bedford, Pa., native's top heave was 68.48m. With the result, Cook garnered second team all-America honors. The most recent Black Knight to earn second team all-America recognition was Mike Renard, who finished 14th in discus in 2019.
Â
"My takeaway from the meet is that August is ready to throw far. He just didn't do it tonight," Army head coach Mike Smith said. "He looked great all week and was sharp during the warmup, but his first competition throw was out of the sector and he was a little off on his last two attempts. Having said that his 13th place finish is the best that we have had at the NCAA meet in the last 10 years. He is only the second Army track and field athlete in the history of our program to compete at this meet in every year of his eligibility. He finishes his collegiate career as one of our most decorated athletes and he has set a new standard for excellence within our program. He will get one more chance to set some more records when he comes back out here next week to compete in the Olympic Trials."
Cook was just the second person in program history to advance to nationals at least three times. He holds the program record in the javelin with a mark of 75.20m, which he threw in the Patriot League outdoor championships. That mark also doubled as a meet record.
