May 15, 2021 | Baseball
The Black Knights (25-22) took game one, 8-6, before falling in game two to Lafayette (14-16), 9-1.
The Black Knights went down 2-0 in the early goings of game one vs. Lafayette as the Leopards plated one in the first and another in the second.
The Black Knights had a hit in the first inning, but Lafayette starter Kyle Subers kept them off balance until he lost the zone in the bottom of the fourth. The Black Knights drew three walks to load the bases with two down. Hunter Meade came through with just the second hit of the day, a double down the right field line to tie the ballgame up, 2-2. Then with runners on second and third, the next pitch Suber uncorked to Kevin Dubrule was wild to the backstop and Anthony Giachin came home to give the Black Knights a 3-2 lead.
In the back-and-forth contest, the Leopards add a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Black Knights broke out to score two runs to take the lead back and never looked back. Carter Macias singled home the first run after Tim Simoes tripled to lead off the inning. The second run, Anthony Giachin, came home on a wild pitch.
The Black Knights then added one more in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull ahead, 8-4.
The Leopards added two in the top of the ninth inning to make it a 8-6 lead, but reliever Connely Early entered and shored things up, getting the first save of his career.
Reliever Tanner Gresham, who tossed 3.0 innings (the sixth, seventh and eighth) earned the win, improving to 5-1 on the year.
Lafayette reliever Nolan Morr took the loss to fall to 2-2 on the year.
Game two was all Lafayette, as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the fourth inning before the Black Knights got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. They then answered back with three in the sixth, one in the seventh and one more in the ninth to make it 10-1, Leopards.
Lafayette starter Luke Benneche kept the Black Knights off balance, tossing 6.2 innings of four-hit baseball, allowing just one unearned run with three walks and four strikeouts in the win.
The Black Knights had a big chance to cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh after a hit by pitch and back-to-back walks by Benneche. Reliever Adam Bogosian entered and Kevin Dubrule went first-pitch swinging but flied to out to left to leave the bases loaded.
