Baseball Splits at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Black Knights split a doubleheader at Rhode Island on Tuesday afternoon, taking game one 8-1 before falling 9-5 in game two.
The Black Knights (24-21) took control early in game one, taking a 2-0 lead in the first and adding a run in the third, fourth, two in the fifth and two in the seventh for the commanding 8-1 victory. The lone run for Rhode Island (20-22-1) came in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Black Knight offense was efficient, scoring the eight runs on just five hits while taking advantage of Rhode Island's five errors on the day.
On the mound, Connley Early tossed 4.0 innings of scoreless two-hit baseball, with four strikeouts and four walks. Harry Flannery finished it off with the final three frames, giving up just one run on two hits with one strikeout. Early earned the win to improve to 4-2 while Flannery got the three-inning save.
In game two, the Black Knights went down early, as Rhode Island plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning off starter Sean Dennehy who was chased early.
However, the offense answered back with three in the top of the second to close the gap. 5-3.
They then tied the game up with one run in the fourth off a Hunter Meade RBI double and another in the fifth off a Bennett Smith fly out to make it 5-5.
Rhode Island had another big inning in the sixth however, putting up four runs on one hit, taking advantage one walk and two hit-by-pitch to take a 9-5 lead that they Black Knights couldn't overcome.
Tyler Pritchard took the loss in game two, his first decision of the year.

The Black Knights are set to host Lafayette in the semifinal of the Patriot League Baseball Championships starting on Saturday, May 15 at 1 p.m. ET.
