Tovkach Named Scholar Athlete of the Year, Five Named Academic All-League

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Anna Tovkach was named the 2020-21 Patriot League Women's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The Black Knights also had a total of five members tabbed to the academic all-league team. Hannah Blakey, Bonvie Fosam and Tovkach were Army's representatives on the women's side, while Tyrese Bender and Ryan Hogan earned the distinction on the men's side.

Tovkach posted four event wins and had top-two finishes in all eight races she competed in during the outdoor season. The Gainesville, Fla., native is an environmental engineering major and owns a cumulative grade point average of 4.016. She was part of the 4x800m relay team which placed first in the Patriot League Championships with a time of 8:59.64. The junior also placed second in both the 800m (2:08.64) and the 4x400m (3:46.29). This is the third time in Tovkach's career that she has been named to the academic all-league team, as she previously earned the honor in each of the last two indoor seasons.

Blakey, a sophomore Persian and French major, maintains a cumulative GPA of 4.108. She had four event wins and posted top-two finishes in all nine races she competed in during the outdoor season. At the Patriot League Championships, she took first in the 100m hurdles with a program record time of 1:00.33. She also was part of Army's 4x400m relay team which placed second in 3:46.29. This is her second academic-all league honor, as she also earned the honor for the indoor season.

A senior from Robbinsville, N.J., Fosam recorded seven event wins and had nine top-two finishes during the outdoor season. She maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.629 in engineering management. At the Patriot League Championships, Fosam earned a first-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 12.39m, which was .27m longer than the second place finisher.

Bender, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, had one event win and notched four top-three finishes during the outdoor season. An engineering management major, he holds a cumulative GPA of 4.045. At the Patriot League Championships, he placed second in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 15.02m, which is tied for the sixth best distance in program history. He also finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.96m. Bender was named the men's 2020-21 scholar athlete of the year for the indoor season.

Hogan registered six event wins and had eight top-two finishes during the outdoor season. A computer science major, he holds a cumulative GPA of 3.996. The Denver native was part of Army's 4x100m relay team which finished first at the Patriot League Championships with a time of 40.69. He placed fourth in the 200m with a personal record time of 21.39 and was fifth in the 100m in 10.73, his second best personal time.
