Baseball Takes Midweek Contest at St. Joe's, 4-3

PHILADELPHIA – The Army Black Knights won their ninth-straight contest as they defeated Saint Joseph's University on the road, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Black Knights (12-11) scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning off an RBI single from Sam Ruta and reliever Connelly Early took the win as the tossed 3.0 scoreless down the stretch.

The Black Knights got on the board first, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Jeremiah Adams got us started with an RBI double down the left field line, followed by a Derek Berg single through the left side to plate the second run of the inning.

The Hawks (5-6) didn't waste any time, however, as Callahan delivered a solo home run off Army starter Joel Rubin, and the Army lead was cut in half, 2-1.

The Hawks then tied the ballgame up in the fourth inning as Picollo came through with an RBI single off Rubin.

Rubin's final line was two runs, four hits, two walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. He earned the no-decision.

The Black Knights answered right back, however, as Carter Macias delivered a sac fly to take the lead back, 3-2.

The back-and-forth game continued as Zimmerman of SJU delivered a solo home run off reliever Ben DeLaubell to deadlock the game back at 3-3.

In the eighth inning, however, the Black Knights mounted their own rally and with two on Sam Ruta came through once again, delivering an RBI single to right to score Ross Friedrick, giving the Black Knights the lead back, 4-3.

Early put up zeroes in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to preserve the win. He is now 1-0 on the year.

NOTES

Early improves to 1-0 on the year with the victory, after tossing 3.0 scoreless innings.
Derek Berg led the Black Knights with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, with one RBI and one run scored.
Ross Friedrick was the only other Black Knight to have a multi-hit outing as he went 2-for-4 with on run scored.
Ruta, Berg, Macias and Adams each drove in a run on the day.

The Black Knights will resume Patriot League play as they are set for a four-game series vs. Holy Cross this weekend, starting with two games in Worcester, Mass., non Saturday.
