WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team split the four-game weekend with Lehigh, dropping both contests on Sunday at Doubleday Field, 4-3 and 11-9. On Saturday the Black Knights took two from the Mountain Hawks on their home turf.
Army (14-14, 9-5 Patriot League) outhit the Mountain Hawks 10-6 in the 11-inning, 4-3 loss in game one of the series. The Black Knights had plenty of opportunities down the stretch, but stranded a total of 17 runners on the day as they just couldn't bring home the go-ahead run.
The Black Knights led 2-1 through the first six frames, however in the top of the seventh inning of the seven-inning contest, the Mountain Hawks added two runs to push their lead to 3-2.
However, the Black Knights answered back with a Tim Simoes RBI single in the seventh inning to tie the game up 3-3 and send it to extra innings.
The Black Knights left runners on in every inning in extras, but just couldn't push the run across. The Mountain Hawks took the 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th on a Tyler Young single and the Black Knights couldn't answer in the bottom half, dropping game one of the series.
Tim Simoes and Anthony Giachin each had two hits on the day to lead the way at the plate.
Starter Patrick Melampy tossed 5.2 innings of one-run baseball, allowing just three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Reliever Ben DeLaubell took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year.
Game two was an offensive, back-and-forth affair. Once again, the Black Knights led the way with 10 hits to eight hits for the Mountain Hawks. Also playing a part on the day were three errors by Lehigh and two for the Black Knights.
Army jumped out to a 5-3 lead, but quickly the Mountain Hawks answered back with two in the top of the third to tie the ballgame.
