April 18, 2021 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team split the four-game weekend with Lehigh, dropping both contests on Sunday at Doubleday Field, 4-3 and 11-9. On Saturday the Black Knights took two from the Mountain Hawks on their home turf.Â
Â
Army (14-14, 9-5 Patriot League) outhit the Mountain Hawks 10-6 in the 11-inning, 4-3 loss in game one of the series. The Black Knights had plenty of opportunities down the stretch, but stranded a total of 17 runners on the day as they just couldn't bring home the go-ahead run.Â
Â
The Black Knights led 2-1 through the first six frames, however in the top of the seventh inning of the seven-inning contest, the Mountain Hawks added two runs to push their lead to 3-2.Â
Â
However, the Black Knights answered back with a Tim Simoes RBI single in the seventh inning to tie the game up 3-3 and send it to extra innings.
Â
The Black Knights left runners on in every inning in extras, but just couldn't push the run across. The Mountain Hawks took the 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th on a Tyler Young single and the Black Knights couldn't answer in the bottom half, dropping game one of the series.Â
Â
Tim Simoes and Anthony Giachin each had two hits on the day to lead the way at the plate.Â
Â
Starter Patrick Melampy tossed 5.2 innings of one-run baseball, allowing just three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Reliever Ben DeLaubell took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year.Â
Â
Game two was an offensive, back-and-forth affair. Once again, the Black Knights led the way with 10 hits to eight hits for the Mountain Hawks. Also playing a part on the day were three errors by Lehigh and two for the Black Knights.Â
Â
Army jumped out to a 5-3 lead, but quickly the Mountain Hawks answered back with two in the top of the third to tie the ballgame. They then pulled ahead, 8-5, but the Black Knights added three in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Lehigh added three in the top of the sixth to pull ahead, 11-8 and that was all they needed. Army added one more in the eighth but were unable to put together a bigger rally.Â
Â
Derek Berg led the way with three hits, while Giachin and Manesis both had two hits. Giachin also added three RBI and two stolen bases. Robert Regine launched a solo home run, the first of his career.Â
Â
The Black Knights used six arms on the day, with reliever Sean Dennehy taking the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year. Lehigh reliever Nick Pave finished out the final five frames and took the win to improve to 1-0 on the year.Â
