Army Outlasts Holy Cross on the Road
April 01, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team used a 6-0 run spanning from the latter portion of the first half into the early goings of the second half to top Holy Cross, 13-10, and pick up its first win of the season Thursday afternoon.
"Anytime you can go on the road midweek against a tough opponent and come away with a win it's great," Army head coach Kristen Skiera said. "This has postseason implications with the game being against one of our north division opponents. I'm really proud of our women. To come back from a heart-breaking loss against Navy and turn around and start this game hot and with a lot of confidence -- I'm really proud of the team for that."
"Coming off the game last weekend, I know we felt we had played a lot better than we had in our first two games," junior attacker Caroline Raymond said. "We were just really excited to come out here today and get a win away from home."
Army won the draw control battle 19-6. Raymond set a new single-game program record with 12 draw controls, to top Jackie Brattan's previous mark of 11 against Monmouth on March 2, 2019.
"I definitely give credit to Julia Franzoni being able to place the ball exactly where it needs to go in the circle. It just made it really easy for me," Raymond said.
"Between Julia Franzoni, Jackie Brattan and Caroline Raymond they had an absolutely dominating performance on the draw today, which was what ultimately won us the game," Skiera added.
Army jumped to 6-3 lead by the 12:30 mark of the first half after Anna Orlando became the fifth different Black Knight to find the back of the net. However, Holy Cross netted three consecutive goals to even the score at six apiece by the 6:41 mark.
That score held for 33 seconds.
Jolie Riedell become the sixth different member of the Black Knights to score a goal and give Army the 7-6 lead. The tally ignited the 6-0 run for the Cadets, which ended with another goal from Riedell at the 25:57 mark of the second half and put Army ahead 12-6.
Before the contest ended Megan Raftery became the seventh Black Knight to net a goal.
"This is really great validation that we're on this journey together and we're doing all the right things," Skiera said. "It's been a crazy year. I'm really proud of the team. They've stuck together. We opened the season with three tough losses. So, to come out here and get this first win, I'm really proud of them."
