Black Knights Complete Come-from-Behind Walk-Off Win Over URI
March 30, 2021 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the second-straight game the Black Knights delivered bottom of the ninth theatrics, scoring two in the inning to walk off Rhode Island, 3-2 on Tuesday evening at Doubleday Field.
The Black Knights (8-11) entered the bottom of the ninth, trailing 2-1, but Nick Manesis started things off with a single through the left side. Jeremiah Adams then laid down a beautiful bunt right down the first base line, that fell in for a single, giving the Black Knights two on and nobody out. Ross Friedrick drew a walk to load the bases and Rhode Island (10-10-1) went to the bullpen for reliever Bo Brutti. Cameron Cerruto delivered an infield single to the right side that plated the game-tying run in Manesis. Sam Ruta hit into a fielder's choice, where the go-ahead run was cut down at home, but the bases remained juiced with just one out for Hunter Meade. Meade delivered, singling with a bouncing ball through the left side to score pinch runner Rob Regine from third to give the Black Knights at 3-2 walk-off victory.
A staff day on the hill, the Black Knights used eight pitchers behind starter Patrick Melampy who went 3.0 scoreless with four strikeouts. Reliever Tanner Gresham earned the win, tossing the final 1.2 frames to improve to 2-0 on the year.
The Black Knights scored first on the day, taking advantage of a throwing error by URI's shortstop to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
URI executed the squeeze bunt in the sixth to even the game at 1-1 and took a 2-1 lead in the eighth off an RBI double by Coley.
Todd Moxey took the loss for URI on the day.
The Black Knights continue their homestand on Saturday as they host Lafayette for two starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 3 at Doubleday Field. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
