Men's Soccer Drops Spring Opener, 2-1 to Holy Cross

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team fell to 2-1 to visiting Holy Cross in its first competition of the Spring 2021 season at Clinton Field at Malek Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Black Knights (2-1, 0-1 Patriot League) outshot Holy Cross (1-1, 1-1 Patriot League), 15-8 and had five corner kicks to the Crusaders' two, but were unable to find the equalizer after scoring their first goal in the 89th minute of play.
The lone goal for the Black Knights on the day came off the head of Eric Whiteman, who delivered the header off the ricochet of a save made by Crusader keeper, Nick Conklu.
The Crusaders scored their first goal of the day in the 18th minute as Dylan Scanley found the lower left corner off a cross from the right side off the foot of Matt McGonigle.
McGonigle himself put the Crusaders up, 2-0 in the 67th minute as Max Krause delivered a cross to the waiting McGonigle who slotted it home.
Army goalkeeper Jacob Suppiah took the loss, his first of the season. He finished with three saves.
Whiteman finished with four shots and the lone goal on the day for the Black Knights, while Oscar Pereira led the team with six shots on goal.
GAME NOTES
-The original opponent set for today for the Black Knights was Navy in the annual Army-Navy Cup in Chester, Pa. It was postponed with the hopes of making it up at a later date.
-Whiteman's goal is his first of the season and first since he had three during the 2018 season.
