Army Drops the First of Three Game Series with SJU
March 12, 2021 | Softball
PHILADELPHIA, PA – After taking an early lead in the top of the first inning, the Army West Point softball team dropped a tough 3-1 loss to Saint Joseph's University in the first of a three-game series.
The Black Knights lone run came from center fielder Brook Mitchell. Alicyn Grete gave Army their first base runner in the first at bat of the game, giving the Black Knights a strong momentum to put runs on the board first. Mitchell reached first base on a throwing error by the Hawks pitcher to put Army in a first and third situation.
After a quick steal by Mitchell, Grete got picked off at third putting Army with a lone runner on second and Angelina Bebek at the plate. Bebek advanced Mitchell to third on a grounder to the mound but set Jolie Duong up for an RBI situation with a single to the right side, scoring Mitchell.
The Black Knights were able to hold the Hawks off until the fourth inning when Molly Kapala homered down the left field line to tie up the game. The Hawks added two more in the bottom of the fifth on two hits to seal the deal. SJU threatened to add more runs to the board in the sixth but a diving catch by Mitchell in left center allowed the Black Knights to hold on to only a two run deficit.
