Army Ranked No. 3 in Patriot League Preseason Poll; Two Named to All-League Team

WEST POINT, N.Y. - After competing to a perfect 7-0 record in 2020 before having their season cut short, the Army West Point women's lacrosse team has found themselves amongst the top ranks of the conference lineup Thursday morning. The Black Knights were slated No. 3 on the Patriot League Preseason poll with 125 votes and had two members of their offense named to the Preseason All-League Team, including attackers Jackie Brattan and Caroline Raymond.Â
Army was on their way to a record breaking season in 2020, tied for the longest winning streak in program history and the second straight season that the Black Knights started 7-0.
"This spring's schedule has a different rhythm to it but we are so excited to get back on the field and compete in Patriot League games, especially after not having the opportunity to do so last year," said Head Coach Kristen Skiera. "Unique to this season, we have only four games that count towards Patriot League tournament seeding, so we will have to seize these opportunities. The team has been battling each other in practice since August and I have been so proud of their unrelenting efforts and resilience throughout this ever-changing and challenging COVID environment. It has been nearly eleven months since we last played outside competition, so we are very much looking forward to having the opportunity to scrimmage a very good Bryant team before our season opener in Philly. We will have a great mix of veterans and new faces on the field, combined with depth and strong leadership from our senior class."
Brattan and Raymond were recognized among the conferences best for the second straight season, both coming off successful runs in 2020. In her junior campaign, Brattan played and started in four games, amassing 18 points on 14 goals and four assists in addition to logging 14 draw controls and on ball. The Garden City, N.Y. native ranked third on the team in goals scored and fourth in points and notched four multi-point outings with a trio of hat tricks. In 2020, Brattan became the fifth cadet in program history to tally 100 career points and score over 100 career goals.Â
Offensive counterpoint Caroline Raymond closed out a shortened 2020 season at a high, starting in all seven games as a sophomore. Raymond complied 25 points on 18 goals and seven assists, ranked first on the team in both categories. In addition to her 25 points, Raymond also tallied 14 ground balls, 10 caused turnover and nine draw controls. As a sophomore, she was one of just five cadets on the team to score double-digit goals while recording seven multi-point outings and four hat tricks. In the Black Knights final contest against East Carolina, the Mahopac, N.Y. native extended her point streak to a total 25 games, dating back to the 2019 season.Â
"Since Jackie and Caroline have last appeared in Patriot League games in 2019, they have matured, gained more confidence and diversified the skills in their arsenal," said Skiera. "They are very deserving of their pre-season recognition. I cannot wait to see how they play off of each other and how the attention they warrant will open up opportunities for their teammates to succeed."
Although constantly changing to properly reflect school and conference guidelines regarding COVID-19, Army is scheduled to open their 2021 season on the road against Saint Joseph's University on Feb. 20.Â
