Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team fell to the Colgate, 3-2, Friday night in its season-opener at Cotterell Court. The tilt was a rematch of last season's Patriot League semifinal, which Army won 3-1 to advance to its first Patriot League championship game since 2015.

The Cadets won the first two sets, but the Raiders managed to overcome the early adversity and win the final three sets.

Army had a trio of players with double-digit kills, led by Savannah Bray who notched 13 in her collegiate debut. Monica Eckford had Allanah Cutler, who also made her collegiate debut, had 12 and 11 respectively.

The Black Knights narrowly took the first set 25-23. The Cadets had a .467 kill percentage in the first and trailed just once in the set. Despite that, Army largest lead of the first stanza was four. The Black Knights held the 24-20 lead and went on to take the first frame by a score of 25-23.

Army dominated the second set, jumping to an 11-5 lead before going on to take it 25-12. The Black Knights had a pair of five-point runs in the frame. Army once again had a strong kill percentage of .471 in second frame.

Colgate flipped the script in the third set, winning 25-14. The fourth stanza was tight throughout, but the Raiders possessed the lead for the majority of the frame. Army worked to even the score at 20 and then again at 22, but Colgate closed out the set with three consecutive points.

The opening portion of the fifth was neck-and-neck with the score knotted, 8-8. However, Colgate caught fire, scoring seven of the match's next eight points.
