December 20, 2021 | Football
TAMPA, Fla. – For the second time in three seasons, the Army Black Knights will be represented in the East-West Shrine Bowl as senior captain Nolan Cockrill accepted an invitation on Monday afternoon.
Â
Cockrill joins former teammate and current New York Jets Elijah Riley in the selection to the roster, as the defensive back earned a selection in 2019.
Â
The 97th rendition of the East-West Shrine Game is set for an 8 p.m. ET  on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and will be carried on NFL Network.
Â
A nose tackle, Cockrill has made 25-straight appearances for the Cadets and was recently named to the first team on Phil Steele's All-Independent Team.
Â
The Centreville, Va. native is credited with the team's third-most TFLs in 2021, having recorded 7.5 for 19 yards of loss - a figure that includes 2.5 sacks. He leads the Black Knights with a pair of fumble recoveries and additionally has 39 tackles, five QB hurries and a pass breakup under his belt. Cockrill has helped the Army defense hold opponents to 10 points or less in three games, while limiting opponents to just 110 rushing yards per game.
Â
The East-West Shrine Bowl is the longest running college all-star football showcase in the nation. For more than 90 years, some of football's greatest athletes and coaches have contributed to the tradition of the East-West Shrine Bowl. Players like Gale Sayers, Tom Brady, John Elway, Allan Page, Dick Butkus, Brett Favre, Gino Marchetti and Walter Payton, along with coaches Don Shula, Dick Vermeil, Paul "Bear" Bryant and Jerry Glanville, to name a few, have supported the East-West Shrine Bowl.
Since 1925, the East-West Shrine Bowl has benefited Shriners Hospitals for Children and its mission to provide advanced care for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families' ability to pay for services. Players and coaches visit a local Shriners Hospitals for Children during game week to meet the patients and gain a greater understanding of the importance of the game.Â
