Hockey Bounces Back With 4-1 Win Over Sacred Heart
December 02, 2021 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. – It was an all-around great night for the Army West Point hockey team, who picked up a key conference win over Sacred Heart on branch night at the United Stated Military Academy. The six senior Cadets all received their branch assignments while celebrating the win in the locker room surrounded by their friends and teammates.
The Cadets had plenty to celebrate on the ice as well, picking up three points in Atlantic Hockey play in a 4-1 rout of the Sacred Heart Pioneers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a slow start to the action, Army finally found a hole in the Sacred Heart defense and scored its first goal on a wrist shot from Kendrick Frost. Patrick Smyth had the primary helper and Brody Medeiros recorded his first career point with the secondary assist on the shot.
Sacred Heart put a tally on the board early in the first, but the Black Knights answered just 18 seconds later. Chris Konin scored his first career goal – the eventual game winner - off a centering pass from Andrew Quetell to put Army up a goal.
After making a great defensive play on the blue line, Joey Baez broke away from the defense and beat the goalie to put Army up 3-1. Daniel Haider rounded out the scoring for Army with a tip in goal at the net after shot attempts from Jake Felker and Chris Konin ricocheted off the pads of the Pionner goaltender. Felker and Konin were both credited with assists on Haider's second goal of the season.
After building the lead, Army coasted to a 4-1 win, controlling the puck in the SHU zone for a majority of the game and final period of play.
Gavin Abric cleaned up with 24 saves in a solid effort between the pipes to lift Army to a solid bounce back win.
