Black Knights Win Double Overtime Thriller Against Maine

WEST POINT, N.Y. --- Five Black Knights scored in double-digit figures to help Army West Point women's basketball (3-2, 0-0) secure the double overtime win over Maine (2-4, 0-0), 87-81, on Friday afternoon in Christl Arena.
Army came alive in the first half but hit a rough patch in the third quarter. The Black Knights bounced back in the fourth to keep within one of the Black Bears. With seconds left on the clock in regulation, Sabria Hunter hit a put back layup to send the game into overtime. The team rallied together in two overtimes to win 87-81 over the Black Bears.
Alisa Fallon and Hunter each recorded double-doubles in Army's win with Fallon scoring 18 points and securing 10 rebounds while Hunter had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Hunter was working on defense for the Cadets recording three steals, two solo blocks, and one block assist. Kate Murray led the team in scoring with 21 points while also collecting eight rebounds, two solo blocks, two block assists, and two assist. Trinity Hardy added 12 points in the Black Knights' victory along with three assists and six rebounds. Lindsey Scamman was the fourth Cadet to score in double-digits for the team scoring 10 points and going 2-for-2 from the three-point line.
How It Happened
Army hit back-to-back three pointers to open the first quarter setting the tone of the first half. Maine was able to stay on the Black Knights' heels in the first, but Army went on a 5-0 scoring run highlighted by a drive to the rim by Hardy to end the quarter 19-14. Though Maine was shooting better in the first, Army was able to score seven points of the Black Bears' turnovers. Fallon led the team with seven points while Murray had six points and one rebound.
The Black Knights picked up right where they left off going on a 6-0 scoring run while keeping Maine scoreless for the first four minutes of the second quarter. Army only allowed the Black Bears to score 10 points in the ten-minute period while the Black Knights racked up 15. With a ten-point lead heading into the half, Army was winning the battle on the boards 19-13 over Maine. Army had two players in the double-digits after two quarters: Fallon and Murray. The Black Knights were solid at the free-throw line in the first half, shooting 100 percent.
Maine came out with a vengeance in the third quarter, shooting 60 percent from the floor and 50 percent from beyond the arc. Army lost steam, scoring 15 points while the Black Bears racked up 21. Lauren Lithgow led the team with six points in the quarter to help the Black Knights keep their lead, 49-45, but Maine was on their heels.
The teams traded baskets, but Maine's offense hit its groove taking a three-point lead with a minute and a half left. Murray hit a trey to tie things up at 68-68 but the Black Bears found the lane on the other end of the court for two points. With two seconds left on the clock, head coach Missy Traversi drew up a play for the squad. The team found Murray open on the arc for three, the ball bounced out and Hunter was there for the put back sending the game into the first overtime.
In the first overtime Maine took a lead, 76-72, with under two minutes left. Hunter hit made a bucket in the paint to chop Maine's lead to three. A less than a minute left in overtime, Fallon battle for a rebound and went up for the second chance shot. Fallon made the basket and drew the foul for the three-point play, sending the game into a second overtime.
Army's offense found its second win late in the five-minute period scoring eight points in the final two minutes. Army held Maine to 11 points while the Black Knights score 17. Army won the game 87-81, extending its winning streak to three games.
