Bilek's Hat-Trick Leads Army in 6-3 Win Over Yale
November 12, 2021 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey fed off the energy from the sold-out Tate Rink crowd to win its third straight game, defeating Yale, 6-3. Colin Bilek's hat trick and Kendrick Frost's first career goal lifted Army to it's second consecutive win over an ECAC foe.
Noah Wilson and Anthony Firriolo stepped up defensively, blocking three shots a piece in front of goaltender, Gavin Abric who saved 30 shots en route to his – and the team's - third win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Army came charging out of the gate, scoring two first period goals in the first twelve minutes of action to build a quick 2-0 lead.
Senior captain Colin Bilek got the Black Knights going seven minutes into the first period. The captain caught Yale in the middle of a change, caught the puck out of the air and broke free to score a short-handed breakaway goal.
The Cadets got another goal just four minutes later when Kendrick Frost's drive ended up in the back of the net. The goal was the first of his career and put Army up 2-0 midway through the period. Yale would answer with a goal of its own to head into the first intermission down 2-1.
Yale got a power play opportunity early in the second period but came up short thanks to three saves from Gavin Abric. Senior defenseman, Coby Mack, jumped in front of two shots to supplement the defensive effort on the successful penalty kill. Yale would tie the game at the nine-minute mark in the period, but the tie would not last long.
Brett Abdelnour broke the tie at 16:26 in the period, putting home a rebound to put the Cadets back in front.
The game-winner for Army came off the stick of Colin Bilek at 18:16 in the third period on a powerplay, but a review was needed to confirm the goal. Bilek buried a drive in the back of the net, giving Army a 4-2 advantage early in the third period.
Bilek finished off his hat-trick with an empty-net goal late in the period to seal the win. Rick Lyle followed up with another empty-net goal as Army would go on to win, 6-3.
