Volleyball Sweeps Bucknell on the Road

LEWISBURG, Pa. --- Army West Point (14-6, 8-3)volleyball secured the weekend sweep after downing Bucknell (6-14,2-9) in three sets on Saturday afternoon at Davis Gym.

Army was strong on defense with two solo blocks and 12 block assists to hold the Bison to a .098 hitting percentage after three sets. Paige Fixemer played a big role in the wall at the net, recording one solo block and four block assists. Diana Ethridge also helped on the defensive end recording 10 digs while notching 27 assists for her seventh double-double of the season.

The Black Knights' offense was able to get the job done with help from Cate Buckingham, who led the team with 11 kills, and Fixemer who notched nine kills. Savannah Bray also played a role adding on eight kills.

How It Happened

The teams were evenly matched at the beginning of the set, trading points, and taking advantage of the other's errors. Allanah Cutler threw down a kill that ignited a 5-0 scoring run for the Black Knights, allowing them to take a 16-11 lead over the Bison. During the scoring run, Fixemer recorded two kills and a solo block. Bucknell fought back but Army was able to keep its lead only allowing the Bison to get within three. Fixemer ended the set with a kill to secure the win for Army, 25-20, and finished the set with four kills. Mackenzie Karnig recorded two service aces in the set for the Black Knights.

Army took the lead first with help from Buckingham on the attack to lead 8-3 at the first timeout. Bucknell fought back out of the timeout, but Buckingham ended it with a kill to start a 4-0 scoring run for the Cadets. She led the team with six kills in the set hitting .308. The Bison started to gain on the Black Knights' heels, cutting their lead to 24-20. Bray threw down set point for Army, winning the set 25-22.

The start of set three was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. Army was able to fire off small scoring runs to have a 15-14 lead at the first timeout. The Black Knights took advantage of Bucknell's errors to start a 4-0 run to increase their lead to 20-17. Two big blocks from the Cadets helped keep the set in their control, giving Bray the opportunity to record a kill for match point. Army won the set 25-22 to sweep Bucknell in three sets.
