WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point (10-3, 4-1) volleyball picked up its second Patriot League sweep of the season by defeating Holy Cross (1-15, 0-5) 3-0 on Friday night at Gillis Field House.
Army recorded eight service aces, led by Mackenzie Karnig with four. Cate Buckingham and Paige Fixemer were dominate at the net for the Cadets each recording nine kills. Army recorded 43 kills and a season-best hitting percentage of .351. Fixemer led the Black Knights with four blocks, one being a solo, while the team finished with 12 total blocks compared to the Crusaders' two.
How It Happened
Army had control of the set from the start opening with a 5-0 run powered by two service aces from Karnig. The Crusaders began to fight back but Savannah Bray recorded two consecutive kills to force Holy Cross to take a timeout, 11-5. Out of the timeout, Danielle Wortman served two aces for the Cadets to push the team's lead to 13-5. Army kept their momentum going to finish the set with 25-10 victory over the Crusaders. Fixemer and Bray each recorded four kills, while Butters led the team with eight digs.
The Black Knights opened the set with a 6-0 run highlighted by four kills. Holy Cross fought back to cut Army's lead to 12-5, taking advantage of errors made by the Cadets. Karnig recorded two more services aces in the set to push Army to a 21-8 lead. The Black Knights took the set 25-9 showing dominance at the net with a .400 hitting percentage.
Holy Cross started the set with the momentum to lead 7-3. Buckingham record two kills to help bring the score to 10-7 in the Crusaders' favor. Army went on a 3-0 run to take a 13-12 lead over Holy Cross. Fixemer and Buckingham took turns firing off kills for Army, each finishing with four and six, respectively. The Black Knights kept took over the lead at 15-14 and never gave it up. The Cadets won the set 25-18 to win the match 3-0.
