Men's Basketball Defeats Boston U on the Road, 79-59
January 16, 2021 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON – Army men's basketball defeated Boston University, 79-59, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gymnasium to take the first of back-to-back Patriot League contests between the two squads.
With the win, the Black Knights improved to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League play.
The Black Knights jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half and never looked back, as they did not trail at all during the road contest.
Alex King, Josh Caldwell and Lonnie Grayson led the Black Knights, each scoring in double-figures on the day. King led the way with 20 points, one shy of his season-high. All of Grayson's 10 points came in the second half, while Caldwell finished with 15. Aaron Duhart led the way with six boards and also had a team-high five assists.
The Black Knights shot 53.3 percent from the field on the day, while holding the Terriers to just 37.7 percent shooting from the field. BU had cold streaks in each half, going 8:49 in the first half without a made field goal and 8:05 without a bucket in the second half.
In addition, points in the paint were big for the Black Knights, as 50 of their 79 points came in the paint. The Black Knights only shot 19 three-pointers and were 6-for-19 from behind the arc.
"The biggest thing coming into today is we were concerned with their size, but we won the battle in the paint, 50-16, so really, really pleased with that," said head coach Jimmy Allen. "I thought we played really tough overall today."
For the third-straight game King has scored in double figures and was one point shy of tying his season-high of 21 set last time out vs. Holy Cross.
Allen added, "Alex [King] is really coming into his own, especially being able to drive the basketball and being able to finish. Having patience and poise when he has the basketball and ultimately, what we talk about with our guys, you want to shoot it closer to the basket than where you catch it. With his size he is such a weapon. He creates a lot of mismatches and every single time we needed a basket he was able to get one. He was really the difference in the game today."
In the second half the Black Knights continued to extend their lead over the Terriers and saw their biggest lead of the day come with 3:03 left in the game as they led by 27 points, 74-47.
The Black Knights were able to take advantage of 19 Terrier turnovers, scoring 20 points off turnovers. They were also able to keep their turnovers down, with just 11 on the day.
"We need to feel good about what we did to win the basketball game," said Allen. "Once we get to dinner tonight we will turn the page and figure out how we can be better tomorrow. Very pleased with our guys, going on the road and getting a win like that at BU is very good."
