March 02, 2020 | Men's Basketball
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Senior captains Tommy Funk and Matt Wilson of the Army West Point men's basketball team collected Patriot League postseason honors on Monday afternoon.
Funk was named First Team All-Patriot League, the first cadet to receive the honor since Tanner Plomb '16 did following the 2015-16 campaign. Wilson earned second team recognition, the first postseason honor for the senior big.
Funk punctuated his stellar playing career with a senior season for the ages. The Warrington, Pa., native who has made a habit of breaking records, continued that trend in his final season after not only smashing Army's single-season assists record for the third straight year, but also shattering the Patriot League's career assists mark. He scored in double figures in all but two outings and currently holds the longest double-digit scoring streak (25 games) since Army Hall of Famer Kevin Houston '86 did it during his senior campaign.
This year Funk has played and started in all 29 games while averaging a team-best 17.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and a league-best 6.9 assists per game. He has shot the ball at a 45-percent clip from the field and has knocked down 35 percent of his treys. The senior point guard has dished out 200 assists with just 83 turnovers, which equates to a league-high 2.41 assist-to-turnover ratio. He ranked third in the league in points per game, 15th in field goal percentage and sixth in 3-pointers. Funk's assists per contest also ranks seventh in Division I.
He has recorded four double-doubles and has scored over 20 points in eight outings. Funk additionally logged two 30-point performances, the most by a cadet in a single season in program history since Kyle Wilson '16 did during his junior season. He was named the Patriot League's Player of the Week four times and became the first cadet since Jarell Brown '08 to receive player of the week recognition from the league four times in the same year. Funk also was the first player in the league to be recognized by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) as the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week since the 2009-10 season.
Wilson was a force in the low block in his final campaign with the Black Knights. The senior forward averaged 16.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while leading the league and sitting seventh nationally in field goal percentage (.632). He ranks sixth in the Patriot League in scoring and third in rebounding.
Wilson's standout senior season helped him climb his way up the all-time leaderboards at Army. He moved into third in career rebounds and seventh in career points. He additionally became only the second cadet in the program's history to record over 1,500 career points and reel in over 800 career boards.
While playing and starting in all 29 contests, the Alexandria, Ky., native has posted ten 20-point performances and logged a league-best nine double-doubles. He has scored in double figures in 24 outings and has made double-digit shots in seven tilts.
Funk, Wilson and the Black Knights return to action on Thursday to host Lafayette in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Christl Arena. Army topped Lafayette in both regular season meetings this year.
