Army Closes Out Penn State National
February 01, 2020 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Army West Point track and field team capped off competition at the Penn State National Invitation on Saturday.Â
After a day of light participation on Friday, the Black Knights saw an increased workload in today's events.
The meet served as a final day of work for the team before the Cadets set their sights on rival Navy with the Army-Navy Star Meet just a week away in Annapolis.Â
The Black Knights swept the indoor Star Meet last year with both competitions coming down to the final event. Army has won five consecutive women's indoor Star Meets and has won two of the past three meets on the men's side.Â
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"The competitive level of this meet was the best of the indoor season thus far. We were pretty selective in who we competed today. We are focused on the Star meet next weekend and the rest of the championship season that follows, so the entries we brought here today were guys trying to earn a spot on the roster for next week or guys that we felt needed an additional competition to get ready for next week. We didn't win any events but we certainly competed at a high level. We feel pretty good about our lineup going into next weekend. Now we have to go and execute next Saturday."
(On men's meet)
"I thought our guys did a nice job in a bunch of areas today. The throwers faced the stiffest competition of the year today. Mike and Geoff led us in the shot today and I thought both guys put together a good series. The entire throws group has done a nice job of getting ready for the championship season. We had some nice improvements on the track and even more in the field events. Josh Heiman continues to impress in the long jump and Bryce Samuel is starting to put together some nice attempts in the high jump."
(On women's meet)
Emily Mikoud had a strong weekend again. She is certainly pointed in the right direction. We also had some nice improvements on the track. I was particularly pleased with how the middle distance women competed. We have a good mix of veterans and youth in that group and Haley Watson has done a nice job of leading them."
