Army Falls to Navy at Indoor Star Meet
February 08, 2020 | Men's Track and Field
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Army West Point men's track and field team was defeated by Navy in the annual Army-Navy Star Meet in Annapolis on Saturday.Â
Navy held the advantage throughout the day, winning 13 out of 17 events to win the meet 109-71. The result extends the Naval Academy's lead in the 2019-20 Star Series presented by USAA to 9-3-1.Â
Senior Michael Renard was the biggest bright spot on the day for the Black Knights, smashing the Academy shot put record with a throw of 18.76 meters. The toss bests the previous record of 18.36 set by teammate Geoff Kirk earlier this season. Renard also matched the previous record with a separate 18.36 meter throw of his own. The three throws are the only 18+ meter distances in Army West Point program history.Â
Junior Kedrin Jefferson narrowly missed matching his program record in the 200 meter dash, recording a time of 21.32, just .01 away from the record set at last year's Patriot League Championships.Â
The Black Knights will look to rebound with two meets remaining before the Patriot League Championships. They will return to action next weekend at the David Hemery Valentine Invite in Boston.Â
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"We were soundly defeated today. There is no way to sugar coat it. I can't complain about our effort or our preparation, but we can do a better job of competing.
Little things get magnified in this environment, so we will have to make some corrections if we want to defend our conference title three weeks from now. There are no easy wins in this meet and we were unable to win the close events. We also failed to get the critical second and third place finishes that we needed.
Both teams were putting up great marks today. There is an intensity level to this meet that is unmatched in our sport. We had some kids performing at the highest level of their lives only to have Navy do the same and knock us back.
One of the best performances of the day came from Michael Renard in the shot. He broke the school record that Geoff Kirk set in December. He is a big strong kid and his competitive fire was on display today. He has more room to improve, so we'll look forward to seeing what he does in the coming weeks.
I told our team that we can and will be better. Our season moves on and we know what we need to do."
