November 10, 2020 | Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. – After being tabbed to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List in July senior linebacker Joe Stephenson was officially named a nominee for the award Tuesday afternoon. Â
Â
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service", is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel. The award exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
Â
Stephenson volunteers for the In My Bag Tour Foundation, a non-profit organization that develops educated, entrepreneurial-minded individuals who are healthy and serve their communities. At its last event, he helped serve over 500 students and 200 teachers in the Danville, Va., and Philadelphia areas with pre-packaged book bags and gifts of appreciation. The foundation raised over $10,000 in a three-month span in 2019. As a community liaison, Stephenson assists with volunteer communications and event logistics.
Â
At the Academy, Stephenson, an American politics major, is a Dean's List student and a member of the Christian Athlete Society while currently serving as both the Military Development Officer and the Diversity Officer for his company.
Â
The Wuerffel Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA and its 25 awards now boast more than 800 recipients, dating back to 1935. Visit www.ncfaa.org to learn more about the association.
Â
The Brodnax, Va., native has played in 26 career games, amassing 19 tackles. He played in all 13 games as a sophomore and saw action in nine contests last season. This season he's played in just one game, missing time due to injury.
Â
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 29 and finalists will be announced on December 8. The formal announcement of the 2020 recipient is anticipated to be made the week of December 26 - January 2. The presentation of the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy is scheduled to occur at the 52nd All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 20, 2021 in Niceville, Fla.
