Black Knights Topped by American in League Tilt

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's basketball team found itself in another tight Patriot League contest, but ultimately fell to American, 68-60, on Wednesday night at Christl Arena.
It was the third straight game for the Black Knights (5-9, 0-3 Patriot League) in which they were trailing by single-digits late in the game, but this time it was the Eagles (6-8, 2-1 Patriot League) coming away with the victory.
Four cadets scored in double-figures led by a 16-point performance from Matt Wilson. The senior was 8-of-10 from the floor and added a game-high eight boards. Classmate Tommy Funk had a double-double, his first of the season, after pouring in 13 points and handing out 12 helpers.
Lonnie Grayson and Alex King each put up 13 in the scoring column and combined to shoot 10-of-18 from the field with four treys. Grayson added to his stat line with five boards, which was good for third on team.

- Funk became the second player in Patriot League history to reach 600 career assists.
- He now has 606 in his career and is 55 away of becoming the league's all-time leader.
- The Warrington, Pa., native posted the fifth double-double of his career.
- Funk extended his double-digit scoring streak to 10 games, marking the longest by a cadet this season.
- Wilson moved into 17th in all-time points at West Point with 1,290.
- He has now reached double-digit scoring in five straight career outings versus the Eagles.
- Wednesday's matchup marked the 44th all-time meeting between the two squads.
- The Army starters accounted for 95 percent of the team's scoring.
- The Black Knights handed out 15 assists on 26 made shots.
- It marks the 13th time in 14 outings that Army assisted on 50 percent or more of its made shots.
- The Cadets outrebounded American, 29-26.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army was efficient in the opening half, knocking down 62 percent of its shots from the field. However, the Black Knights were plagued by turnovers as 11 miscues allowed the Eagles to generate more offensive possessions. When the halftime horn sounded, Army found itself trailing by eight, 38-30.
- American held its slight advantage for majority of the second half, but a 12-4 run by the Black Knights that was capped by a Funk layup evened the score at 57-57 with 5:33 left to play.
- With 3:11 on the clock, it remained a tie game until the Eagles closed out the contest on an 8-0 run to secure the road win.
