McMullen Shines Again As Cadets Show Depth At VMI
January 18, 2020 | Women's Track and Field
LEXINGTON, Va. - Led by another all-time performance from senior Calli McMullen, the Army West Point women's track and field team showed its strength in the final day of competition at the Keydet Invitational on Saturday.Â
McMullen recorded three victories on Saturday, finishing off the weekend by winning all five of her races. Her 24.26 mark in the 200 meter dash broke her own Academy record that she set at last year's Patriot League Championship. She won all three stages of the 60 meter dash on the weekend and closed out the day by recording the fastest leg in Army's 4x400 meter relay victory.Â
Sophomore Emily Mikoud continues to find success a year after winning the league's top rookie honor as she added another shot put victory to her resume. Freshman Madeline Magoto added two wins on the day by crossing the line first in the 800 meter and anchoring the 4x400.Â
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"We put our people in a lot of events this weekend. At this point in the season, we are looking to get in a lot of competitive efforts so that we can handle those same scenarios when we get to the championship meets. Our women responded well to the challenge of competing when they were tired. On the oval last night, our middle distance and distance people did a nice job in the distance medley relay and then came back today and ran very well in a tactical 800. In the sprints and hurdles, we did a nice job of qualifying yesterday and put up some good marks. And in the field events we were solid both yesterday and today.Â
Olivia Gervan had a great series in the high jump. She has shown a lot of potential in her training both last year and again this year and today she really put everything together and ended up winning the high jump. Emily Mikoud won the weight throw convincingly. She is very close to throwing over our school record. It is only a matter of time before that happens. Bonvie Fosam had a very nice series in the triple jump. She has figured some things out there and a pretty big jump is coming soon from her.
On the oval, we focused on trying to win races and for the most part we were successful there. Anna Tovkach looked very good both last night in the 500 and again today in the 400. She is starting to figure out how to manage the little nuances of racing and adjusting to her new fitness level. While the performances she has put up are good thus far, I think that there is a lot more coming from her. She is number two all time at Army now in the 800 and the 500.Â
The dominant performer for us this weekend was Calli McMullen. It is a recurring theme. I am running out of superlatives to describe what we are seeing from her. She won five races this weekend. She won the 200m, all three rounds of the 60m and had the fastest leg of anyone in the meet on our winning 4x400 relay. She has incredible range and has already surpassed the fitness level that she had reached by the end of the indoor season last year. This meet is only our second meet back from winter break and today's time broke her own school record in the 200m....and she did it out of lane six. Calli only saw her competition today when she walked up to the blocks. The gun went off and so did she. She just ran away from everyone.Â
This was a very productive meet for us both from a work perspective and a performance perspective."
