Army Completes Rainbow Wahine Invitational
September 07, 2019 | Volleyball
HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The Army West Point volleyball team was defeated by Sacramento State in five sets in the team's final match of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Saturday.
The Black Knights (3-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a marathon first set (30-28) and a strong second set (25-10). Army could not manage to close out the resilient Hornets who took the final three sets en route to the victory. The contest concluded a three day slate of matches for the Cadets in which they were able to match-up with three western opponents with very different styles.
"Overall it was great for us to test ourselves with a ranked team (Hawaii), a good RPI team (Denver) and a west coast team (Sacramento State)," Head Coach Alma Kovaci Lee said. "They were all very physical, sometimes more physical than us. We played tough vs. Hawaii and during that match we truly showed our potential. Denver's offense is incredibly fast and powerful and they taught us the value of what it means to be ready and available to attack at all times. Their setters run a fast offense, faster than what we will see in the conference, and I like that."
Allie Strong (13 kills, 15 digs) and Hannah Presley (30 assists, 17 digs) posted double-doubles in the final match and libero Ana Oglivie recorded a season high 37 digs with just one error. The performance concludes a strong showing from Oglivie in her home state, posting a 5.92 digs per set average in the tournament.
"We were very good against Sacramento State during the first two sets," Kovaci Lee said. "We played as a team and worked together very well just like we did in the match against Hawaii. But hats off to Sacramento State, they never gave up and kept pushing us to the limit. We ran out of gas a little bit due to long rallies and didn't make the best choices. This team taught us how to never give up and to always fight like there is no tomorrow. So overall, we learned a lot from each team and we will take these lessons and use them to our advantage this coming weekend at our home tournament."
Army returns home next weekend to host Binghamton, Kent State and Bryant in the Black Knights Invitational at Gillis Field House. The Cadets will take on Binghamton on Friday night at 7 pm.
