WEST POINT, N.Y - Army West Point director of cross country and track & field Mike Smith announced the hiring of assistant coach Rebecca Celorio on Friday.Â
"Becky is going to be a great addition to our program," Smith said. "She has the right passion for coaching, the work ethic to preserve and the patience to adapt in the most unique educational environment in college athletics. That skill set will go a long way here and I feel fortunate to have found her."Â
Celorio comes to West Point after two years as an assistant cross country coach at her alma mater, Hofstra University, where she played an integral role in the program's transition to NCAA Division I athletics. Under Celorio's guidance, the program saw a Colonial Athletic Association Champion, three All-CAA athletes, and six school records among other achievements.Â
"When I spoke with Coach Vince Giambanco down at Hofstra about Becky, he said the kinds of intangible things about her that convinced me that she would fit in well here," Smith said. "Now that I have had the chance to be around her and see her interact with student athletes, I am confident that we found the right person."Â
Prior to her time on the coaching staff at Hofstra, Celorio was an accomplished runner for the program. She served as the team's captain and earned two All-CAAÂ Team recognitions, CAA All-Academic Team recognition and is the school record holder in the 5000 meter run.
Following her graduation from the university, she joined the cross country coaching staff at Adelphi University as a graduate assistant and competed in track and field. At Adelphi, she claimed a Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Championship in the 5000 meter run and broke program records in the 3000 meter, 5000 meter and distance medley relay.
A native of Scotia, N.Y., Celorio currently resides in Nyack, N.Y.Â
